[News] Boreal NextGen Summer Series: Opening the Door to the Real World of Law
We were delighted to complete the first session of the Boreal NextGen Summer Series with Matthew W. Taylor and Sotos Class Actions LLP.
Four young participants attended together with their parents, creating a small and highly interactive setting. The purpose of the session was not simply to introduce the legal profession, but to help the next generation look beyond television, social media, and public perception—and understand how lawyers actually study, work, reason, and contribute to society.
Matthew shared his personal academic and professional journey, explained how complex legal cases are developed, and discussed the qualities required to succeed in law. The conversation also explored a broader theme that is central to the Boreal NextGen program: fairness and legal protection do not appear automatically. They are often the result of individuals, lawyers, courts, and communities who are willing to identify problems and pursue them with patience, evidence, and sustained effort.
The participants brought thoughtful and practical questions to the discussion.
During the session, B. asked how many years of education and professional training are required to become a lawyer. He also invited Matthew to share his perspective on ICE, giving the group an opportunity to consider how lawyers approach difficult and evolving public issues.
Q. of Ivey Business School raised an important question about privacy: when students enroll in educational programs, how can their personal information be protected from third parties? She also asked what inspired Matthew to pursue law after completing his studies in medical science. Matthew’s transition from scientific research to legal practice offered a valuable example of how one academic path can develop analytical skills that later support a very different profession.
Representing the parents, Y. asked how families can recognize whether a child may have the interest, aptitude, or personal qualities suited to studying law. The discussion considered characteristics such as curiosity, disciplined thinking, clear communication, resilience, careful reading, and the willingness to examine an issue from more than one perspective.
What made the session especially meaningful was that the questions were not limited to admissions, credentials, or career status. They addressed privacy, public policy, professional motivation, personal aptitude, and the role of law in everyday life.
Our young participants did not need to leave the session having decided whether they wanted to become lawyers. The more important outcome was that they left with better questions, a more realistic understanding of legal practice, and a clearer appreciation of how law and institutions shape the environment in which we live.
Our sincere thanks to Matthew W. Taylor and Sotos Class Actions LLP for their time, openness, and generous support, and to Yusu for hosting and guiding the conversation.
This first session successfully opened a door into the real professional world—and we look forward to continuing that journey through the Boreal NextGen Summer Series.

Boreal NextGen
